JSL Mechanical Services Ltd.Propane conversion planning for Yellowknife

YELLOWKNIFE • OIL-TO-PROPANE CONVERSION

Oil-to-propane conversion in Yellowknife.

Thinking about replacing your oil furnace or boiler? Start with a site assessment. JSL Mechanical can review the equipment, propane supply and installation work your home would need.

A CLEAR PLAN BEFORE YOU COMMIT

How the conversion works

1. Assess your home

Review your oil equipment, heat loss, ductwork or hot-water distribution, service history and fuel use.

2. Plan equipment and fuel

Confirm propane-approved equipment, tank location and capacity, delivery access, venting and electrical needs.

3. Agree on the full scope

Review the written quote, supplier responsibilities, permits, oil-tank removal and any separate work before scheduling.

4. Install and commission

The work includes the required checks and inspections, system startup, controls setup and operating instructions.

Forced-air heat

We assess Lennox gas furnace options approved for propane, along with your ductwork, airflow and controls. Equipment selection depends on your home’s heat loss and installation requirements.

Hot-water heat

If your oil boiler feeds baseboards, radiators or in-floor heating, a propane boiler may let you keep compatible distribution. We review water temperatures, zones, pumps and domestic hot-water needs.

A conversion is worth assessing when your oil equipment is approaching replacement, repairs are adding up or you want to compare a different fuel. Suitable tank space and a workable delivery arrangement are part of that decision.

LOOKING AT HEATING AND COOLING?

Propane heat. Heat pump options.

A compatible propane furnace and heat pump can share the heating load. The heat pump can provide cooling and heating when conditions suit the system, with propane available for colder weather.

Your assessment checks the exact equipment pairing, airflow, controls and changeover settings. Operating costs and cold-weather capacity determine when each system should run. Rebate eligibility must be confirmed for the selected system.

Know the complete installation cost

There is no useful one-price quote without seeing the home. Your written scope should identify:

  • Heating equipment selected for the home and approved for propane
  • Tank location, capacity, delivery access and cold-weather supply requirements
  • Gas piping and regulators, combustion air, venting and condensate drainage
  • Ductwork or hydronic connections, electrical work and controls
  • Required permits, inspections, startup and commissioning
  • Remaining oil, old equipment, tank removal and disposal

Confirm what JSL includes, what the fuel supplier provides and any separate work or exclusions. Operating cost depends on delivered fuel prices, equipment efficiency and heating demand. Bring recent oil bills so the comparison starts with your actual use.

Plan the propane supply for northern winters

Tank capacity has to cover the heating load and provide adequate fuel delivery in cold weather. Location, vaporization capacity, winter access and refill arrangements all matter.

Confirm tank ownership or rental terms, fuel pricing, service fees and contract conditions with the supplier before committing. A furnace’s efficiency rating does not replace a properly planned fuel supply.

Considering a heat pump too?

A compatible heat pump may be assessed as an optional addition. Equipment matching, controls, electrical capacity and operating costs need their own review.

Common conversion questions

Can my existing oil furnace run on propane?

Plan on replacement with equipment approved for propane. Any proposed burner conversion needs specific manufacturer approval and acceptance by the authority having jurisdiction.

Can I keep my hot-water baseboards?

Often, yes. A propane boiler can be assessed for the existing distribution, water temperatures and hot-water demand.

Will propane cost less than oil?

That depends on fuel prices, efficiency and supplier fees. A lower price per litre alone does not establish lower heating cost.

What happens to the oil tank?

The scope should cover remaining fuel, safe decommissioning, removal and disposal, including obsolete fill and vent connections. Confirm who performs that work and what is included.

Does the work need a permit?

GNWT requires a valid permit before gas-equipment installation. Gas fitters must be registered; other approvals depend on the work.

Will the heat work during a power outage?

Most modern furnaces and boiler systems need electricity for controls, fans or pumps. Backup power requires a separate assessment.
