HOME VENTILATION IN YELLOWKNIFE.

Lingering odours, window moisture or a change in airflow? JSL provides ventilation and HVAC support for homes. Tell us about your equipment and concerns so we can confirm the right service.

Know what to report

WHEN VENTILATION NEEDS ATTENTION.

Stale air, cooking odours that linger and recurring window condensation can be reasons to review ventilation. Very dry air also deserves a closer look. Report where and when the problem occurs, any change in fan sound, and whether the controls respond. These observations help narrow the assessment; they do not identify the cause on their own.

If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave immediately for fresh air and call 911 from outside. Do not re-enter until emergency responders say it is safe. Health Canada CO guidance

Understand your equipment

HRV, ERV OR EXHAUST FAN?

01

Heat recovery ventilator

An HRV brings outdoor air into the home and exhausts indoor air. In winter, its heat exchanger transfers some heat from the outgoing air to the incoming air. It supports ventilation; it does not replace the home’s heating system.

02

Energy recovery ventilator

An ERV transfers moisture as well as heat between the air streams. That difference matters when comparing options for a home that is already dry in winter. The right choice depends on the home, its occupants and the equipment’s cold-weather operation.

03

Kitchen and bathroom exhaust

Fans that exhaust outdoors remove moisture and odours near their source. Their operation should be considered alongside the home’s other ventilation and fuel-burning equipment. A fan that only recirculates indoor air does not provide outdoor-air ventilation.

Yellowknife considerations

PLAN FOR COLD-WEATHER OPERATION.

Winter performance depends on the whole installation: the selected unit, ductwork, controls and its frost-management provisions. HRVs may use defrost cycles in cold weather. Persistent ice, an unexpected loss of airflow or water around the unit should be assessed rather than treated with improvised adjustments.

Window moisture is also affected by indoor humidity and cold window surfaces. Condensation alone does not prove that an HRV has failed. Share any humidity readings you already have and note which windows or rooms are affected. Avoid choosing a universal winter humidity setting without considering the home and its equipment.

Maintenance and decisions

CARE FOR THE SYSTEM. CHECK THE FIT.

01

Safe homeowner care

Use the owner’s manual for filter checks and any approved cleaning. Disconnect power as the manual directs before opening a user-access panel; if the steps or access are unclear, leave the task to a technician. Observe accessible outdoor hoods from a safe position for snow or frost blockage. Do not climb, chip ice, remove screens or alter vents.

02

When to request an assessment

Report persistent poor airflow, new noise, water leakage or control problems. Leave electrical work, airflow balancing, duct changes and internal repairs to a qualified professional. Cleaning a filter does not establish that the supply and exhaust flows are balanced. Do not defeat frost protection or other safety controls.

03

Before replacing an air exchanger

An assessment should consider airflow needs, existing ducts, controls, service access and cold-weather operation. Ask whether cleaning or repair may address the concern, and what changes a replacement would require. Share the make and model with JSL so we can confirm the service scope before you plan the work.
